Photographer Vs. Camera

I have an old school opinion when it comes to photography. I believe as a professional photographer you see great photographs and use a camera to capture them; instead of relying on your camera to make photographs and then use Photoshop to manipulate them. When you look through my Portfolio keep in mind the only things that I Photoshop are exit and stop signs.
One time a guy came up to me at a wedding and said something to the effect with those cameras you’re guaranteed a great photographs. The comment bugged me and here is why. In my opinion photography is all about the photographer not the camera. The camera is simply equipment that captures the unique world that the photographer sees. As a profession photographer I believe I can get a great shots with any camera. The trick is you have to know your cameras limitations with in relationship to lighting. Ansel Adams is a perfect example. Ansel Adams was considered one of the greatest photographers of all time. He created amazing photographs long before the advent of digital cameras and Photoshop. He had a very simple 8×10 view camera and delivered high quality prints. He is considered a dark room master and yet he printed without a fancy enlarger only a whole in the wall and a sheet of glass. A great photographer can take great images using any camera and without Photoshop.

Unique’s Headshots

I love meeting people that are driven, inspired and don’t allow excuses to hold them back. Unique 18 yrs old showed up to my house for a shoot with a skateboard and 2 big bags of clothes. When I asked her about the skateboard she said, “I took the bus here.” I was kind of blown away. In a city like Los Angles where very few people take public transportation this lil girl was taking the bus to do a test shoot.  She didn’t even complain about it…. The very next day I had a make up artist cancel because of car troubles. I realized two things.
11.     There are no excuses.
22.     Unique is going to make it because she is never going to let anything hold her back.
I ended up driving her home after the shoot.  Very very cool girl.

Sara,
We received our CD of engagement photos in the mail! They are SPECTACULAR!!! We are headed over to my parents house today and I can not wait to show them to my mom, who already thought they were great! The colors are so vibrant but even in black and white you capture the most amazing story of us! Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to have these memories last a lifetime!

Detail in a wedding dress…

Every wedding photographer get asked this question. Why doesn’t my wedding dresses have more detail in photographs? There are many different causes in play and is probably a combination of several factors. In photo 101 armature photographers learn that a good film exposure has detail in both its highlights and shadows. Digital cameras have a smaller range then traditional film cameras. Digital cameras capture about 4 stops of exposure where as negative film captures about 6 stops.
When I expose, I expose for a bride’s skin tone. If I have a bride that has fair skin and I expose for her skin tone, you will see more detail in the dress. When I’m photographing an bride whose skin is more olive and I expose for her skin tone, her dress will have less detail. If the dress is made out of a synthetic material it will reflect more light then natural materials and will expose lighter and brighter. If the lighting is contrasty (direct overhead sun from clear day) there will be a greater range of exposures which will also cause a brides dress to have less detail when properly exposing for the brides skin tone.
As a professional wedding photographer I can safely say somethings are just out of our hands.
