Maternity Sessions

Things to consider when planing your maternity photo-session.

When it comes to maternity photo sessions I like to keep things simple. Simple clothing, simple backgrounds and a sprinkle of baby toys and clothes for a personal touch. One thing that is really important to consider when planning a maternity session is timing. If you shoot your maternity session too early you won’t look pregnant enough, if you wait to late you’ll be too pregnant. I like to shoot the sessions when you’ve just gone past a little pooch, everyone is different so you need to make that decision. You also want to consider locations, on location at your home could give your photos a personal touch, some where like the beach will give you more of a life style feel. If you have any questions please feel free to call me.

Photographing Models

Here are a couple photographs I took of a girl that is an inspiring model. When you’re an aspiring model it’s really important to have very simple clean photographs. We decided to take a couple of simple photographs that she could submit to several different agencies. Really important when you’re shooting for an agency to have you know minimal make up if you don’t do any retouching it’s got to be very simple. They usually need 1-3 photographs one just a really nice headshot where they can get a good look at your face, a three quarters look, the third a full-bodied. In addition modeling agencies are going to want their measurements. Many times people lie about their height and measurements with is a big mistake. Measurements are used by wardrobe to pull sizes. If you get on a job and you’ve given the wrong sizes you jeopardized the entire shoot. Typical measurements dress size, hip, waist, bust size, height, shoe size,

I finally talked a client into shooting at this location. Every time I drive past this location I think I want to shoot there. This is my new secret spot. I love photographs that appear to be shot in the middle of no-where. The truth is this location is right in the middle of the city.

Sure Shot!

As a professional photographer, I will almost always shoot multiple images of the same thing. Why you ask because there is nothing worse than thinking you’ve captured a magic moment in one frame, only to see that there is something wrong. Had you’ve shot one more frame you would have nailed it. In general, at a typical wedding, I shoot about 3,000 images. Then in post-production, I edit the images down to somewhere around 1,000 images. Due to the fast pace of a wedding there simply is no time to zoom in on each frame in camera to make sure people have their eyes open, so I overshoot to guarantee I get the shot. I overshoot both formals and candids. Believe it or not, candids aren’t often captured in one frame, even though they appear to be.

Most photographers don’t overshoot because they’re either don’t want to spend the time editing or they feel that with their skills they don’t need to overshoot. I feel like its a big mistake not to overshoot you cannot control people and digital space is cheap.

Painless Formals

As a wedding photographer, the hardest part of my day is getting people together for formal photographs. My goal is to get it done as quickly as possible which is why I do some planning ahead of the event as far as timeline and lighting and I use a formal shot list.

Traditional formal photographs have always been taken during cocktail hour.  The problem is we generally start with family formals and then go on to taking photographs of the bride and groom. Many times I find family members would rather be at cocktail hour then taking photographs. So a lot of time is wasted trying to track down family members in the area where cocktail hour is happening which leaves me only a little time with the bride and groom.
What I’ve started to do with my couples is to do a first look and the photos of the couple and finally family formals all before the ceremony. Which leaves us with lots of options as far as the timeline.
Option 1 – If timing runs on schedule the brides is ready, we do the first look, formals of the couple and family formal. Ceremony starts and the couple is free to enjoy their cocktail hour and I do mostly candids for the rest of the evening.
Option 2 – If the bride runs a little late getting ready, we do the first look and then just family formals. During the ceremony, we can do photos of the new couple and hopefully the couple can catch the last part of their cocktail hour.
When you do the formals before the ceremony you don’t have to deal with the distraction of cocktail hour, and couples get the opportunity to go to their cocktail hour. It also helps with the flow of the day.
The reason I do a formal shot list is because it gets my couples thinking about who they want to get photos with before their wedding day, so we’re not left trying to do it on-the-fly the day of. Also, it organizes the all the shots. In general, I start with members of the family that are handy-capped, then I go to the photos that have the biggest group or those who are present. Then I narrow the groups down and check of all the photos that the bride requested.
Many photographers don’t even bother with a formal shot list because they don’t want the liability. I beg my clients to fill it out, it saves us so much stress the day of. Many times my brides don’t want to fill it out and they end up not getting all the people in the formals that they want. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sent the shot list to a bride, they don’t fill it out and after the event, they make a comment about how they wished they got a photo with so and so. As a photographer who works so hard to make my clients over joyed and happy it really bums me out but it not my fault.
